Writing Style
Infuse your writing with power
Style is knowing how to use the right words in the right places to create the maximum impact and engagement for your readers. Your work should flow with strength and intent. When your writing is constipated with unnecessary words or sends your readers to find a dictionary, it blasts them out of the flow of your story, and you may never see them again. Writers don't intend to draft a writing style that doesn't work. Weak and verbose phrases creep into our minds through other cluttered writing, TV, everyday conversations, and numerous other sources.
How can I strengthen my writing?
One strategy you can use to improve the style of your writing is to reach for words in this order:
- Strong verbs: For example, crept is stronger than walked slowly.
- Vivid nouns: For example, burlap is stronger than ugly shirt.
- Adjectives: For example, messy is weaker than chaos.
- Adverbs: For example, quickly is weaker than race.
When considering verbs, try to use words that are rich and specific in meaning. For example, we use the word jump in conjunction with ropes, hopscotch, and other recess activities. We also use it when jumping off a diving board, out of an airplane, or off a cliff. This ubiquity makes squeezing a dramatic picture from the word jump difficult. On the other hand, leap carries a sense of exertion and risk, making it a better option in specific scenarios.
The same is true of nouns. Duty, for instance, conveys a sense of loyalty and honor, whereas commitment doesn't. Most of the —ment words are weak in this way, so try to find alternatives.
How much of my writing should be verbs and nouns?
Most of your writing should consist of powerful verbs and graphic nouns, with a light dusting of adjectives. Only snag an adverb off the shelf if you want to test your editor to see how gifted they are—or if you simply, positively, even absolutely must. If you do, though, please do so judiciously.
Good writing style flows from choosing precise verbs and nouns rather than overloading sentences with adjectives and adverbs. It takes practice, but developing this skill allows you to show rather than tell, creating more immersive and impactful writing.
